'Abd Shams

'Abd Shams was the son of Abd Manaf, a member of the Quraish tribe of Mecca. The descendants of 'Abd Shams are known as Banu Abd Shams, and included in this are the Umayyads. His brother was Hashim who spawned the Banu Hashim tribe of which Muhammad was a member. Hashim was Muhammad's great-grandfather. Abd Shams was Uthman ibn Affan's great-great-grandfather. It is ironic that the descendants of these two brothers would fight so often throughout history, and only in a few generations.
