ART is an acronym for Assisted Reproductive Technology. ART is a general term used to refer to methods used to achieve pregnancy by artificial or partially artificial means (i.e where sexual intercourse does not take place). A more narrow definition applies to methods where the egg cells and sperm are handled in the laboratory to achieve fertilization. ART techniques include in vitro fertilisation and, based on the range of the definition, may include artificial insemination.
