The Abangan form a large majorty of the Javanese Muslims. They tend not to be strict in following Islam, and are more inclined to follow the Adat rather than the Sharia Islamic law. They also strongly believe in both Hindu and Animist superstitions. If a non-Muslim man marries an Abangan Muslim woman, he need not convert to Islam. They also form more than 30% of the Indonesian population. Abangan come from Arabic word aba'a, which mean "not obey", because the Abangan believe shariah should be interpreted figuratively rather than obeyed literally.
