Ackermania is a genus in the orchid family (Orchidaceae), classified in the subfamily Epidendroideae, tribe Maxillareae , subtribe Zygopetalinae . This newly created genus, in alliance with Chondrorhyncha , is named after James Ackerman , an American orchid taxonomist.
Habitat
These species are usually found in montane forests of South America, especially shady, foggy and moist ones.
Species
There are 5 known species in this genus:
- Ackermania caudata (also Chondrorhyncha caudata and Stenia caudata): found in Peru (Cordillera del Cóndor ), Colombia and Ecuador.
- Ackermania cornuta
- Ackermania hajekii: this new species has been recently discovered in Peru. Plant epiphyte, it grows in wet tropical forest, at an altitude of around 3600 feet. Flowers during June and July.
- Ackermania jarae: recently discovered in Huánuco, Peru, this new species is a threatened one.
- Ackermania palorae
