In the early 1960's, Aikido founder Morihei Ueshiba erected the Aiki Shrine in Iwama, Ibaragi Prefecture. Ueshiba built the shrine to acknowledge his belief in Aikido as a spiritual practice. Every April 29th Oomoto priests hold a ceremony in commemoration of Ueshiba's death on April 26th, 1969.
The current Aiki Shrine is on the grounds of an older shrine that still stands behind the present structure. The shrine grounds include a dojo, often referred to as the Dojo at Iwama.
The guardian of the shrine was Morihiro Saito from 1969 until his death in 2002. Moriteru Ueshiba is the current guardian.
