He was born in Bilaspur in Madhya Pradesh. He married Dr. Renu Jogi on October 8, 1975 and has a son, Amit. He is a mechanical engineer educated at Maulana Azad College of Technology, Bhopal, Vikram University, Ujjain, and Faculty of Law, University of Delhi. He has worked as a teacher, civil servant, political and social worker.
