Popular Alliance of Chile

(Redirected from Alianza Popular)

The Popular Alliance (Alianza Popular) also know as just the Alliance (la Alianza) - before named Alliance for Chile - is a coalition of right wing Chilean political parties. It includes the National Renewal Party (RN) and the Independent Democratic Union (UDI),

The alliance conforms the only real opposition to the incumbent government with representation in the Congress. They are perceived as right-wing in many aspects, especially the economy, but as its new name express, they have take a broader approach, concentrating efforts in the middle class and people without means, getting electoral victories in districts formerly thought to be very strong supporters of the Concertación , but they keep getting most of the votes in the districts traditionally associated with them in the North-East of Santiago, which are considered as upper class.

Its principal leader is Joaquín Lavín, former Mayor of Las Condes and former Mayor of Santiago. He represented the Alliance as its Presidential candidate in 1999, losing 51%-49% in the runoff election to Ricardo Lagos of the centre-leftist Concertación. Lavín is running again as the Alliance's nominee for President in the upcoming election on December 11, 2005.
