Aliter

Aliter, which in the Latin language means 'otherwise' or 'by another way', is a traditional part of mathematical jargon. It is used to announce to the reader an alternative method, or proof of a result. In a proof it therefore flags a piece of reasoning that is superfluous from a logical point of view, but has some other interest. The word is not now much used: a modern text on mathematics may use some term such as variant with the same meaning.
