Alrewas is a village appoximately 5 miles north of Lichfield in the county of Staffordshire. It lies on the confluence of the Trent & Mersey Canal and The River Trent, and was previously the seat of The Bishop of Lichfield. It is currently under threat by property developers intending to build "Essington Park"; a proposal that has not been well received by the inhabitants of this small village.
Alrewas is sited adjacent to the A38, which follows the line of Ryknild Street, a Roman road.
Sited just south of Alrewas is the National Memorial Arboretum.
Amateur dramatics society
Alrewas has a thriving amateur dramatics society, who perform no less than 3 plays/musicals a year.
The most recent of such plays, directed by Paula Dumolo was One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest adapted from the novel by Ken Kesey. Trouble arose when Paula was ordered to shut down the second run of the well-received drama, due to open at the Garrick Theatre in Lichfield, because it was feared by the producers of the London version that they may divert a portion of the audience to their performances.
Thankfully Paula and her crew were given permission by the playwright himself to do what they pleased; a large triumph for an underappreciated group of actors.
The three night run received wide critical acclaim, achieving an intensity that the London version never attained.
