The American Letter Mail Company was started by Lysander Spooner in 1844 order to compete with the United States Postal Service monopoly. To be competitive, he offered lower prices for mail delivery. The U.S. government challenged Spooner, eventually exhausting his resources, forcing him to cease operations.
