Aspect ratio

The aspect ratio of a two-dimensional shape is the ratio of its longest dimension to its shortest dimension.

The term is most commonly used with reference to:

• images (see aspect ratio (image))
• paper (see paper size)
• the wing-plans of aircraft or birds (see aspect ratio (wing)).
