Aspies For Freedom

Aspies For Freedom is an autism rights group both online and offline. It was established in 2004 by Amy and Gareth Nelson and quickly gained support from Professor Simon Baron-Cohen, Tony Attwood and Donna Williams.

The group aims to educate the public that autism is not always a disability and there are advantages as well as disadvantages. The group campaigns against abusive forms of therapy, and is against the idea of a cure for autism.

Current campaigns include a protest against the Judge Rotenberg Center for its use of electric shocks on autistic children.

The group was the first to create a chat network for autistic people, irc.chatautism.com and also started Autistic Pride Day in the hopes of allowing others to recognise autism and Asperger's syndrome in a positive sense.

A member of Aspies For Freedom, Joe Mele, protested against NAAR last Fall in the first ever protest by an autistic person against a cure.

Offline groups include New York and North Wales, with others developing.

Aspies for Freedom wiki encyclopedia

Aspies for Freedom has a wiki encyclopedia just like Wikipedia. The differences between the Aspies for Freedom wiki and Wikipedia is that Aspies for Freedom is written from an autistic perspective, and Wikipedia is written from a neutral point of view. In addition, Aspies for Freedom allows space for personal experience while Wikipedia does not allow original research. Aspies for Freedom aims to be an autism encyclopedia while Wikipedia is a general encyclopedia.
