Athlon 64 FX

The Athlon 64 FX is an AMD K8 series processor targeted at enthusiasts. For this reason, the processor is left unlocked, enabling the user to change the operating frequency from the default value. It is intended for users of single-processor personal computer systems. The processor implements the x86 and AMD64 instruction sets. It features 1024 KB (1MB) of Level 2 cache, and a dual channel 128-bit memory controller. It is supplied at frequencies from 2.2GHz. Like the other processors of the K8 series, it features a HyperTransport bus (800 MHz, later 1000 MHz). During the middle of 2005, AMD is planning to switch over to dual-core processors which will include the Athlon 64 FX. The FX also comes in two flavors: one in the 940 pin (server board) form, and one in the 939 pin (desktop board) form. The Athlon 64 FX comes in three models so far, the FX-51, FX-53 and FX-55. A new model known as FX-57 is due to be released in Q2 2005.
