An ambush attack known as the Avivim school bus massacre took place on May 8, 1970 near Avivim, an agricultural community in Israel founded in 1963 by Moroccan immigrants.
It was perpetrated by Palestinian terrorists who crossed the border with Lebanon. The attack caused the death of nine children aged between six and nine and three adults, and left nineteen others maimed.
Subsequently, the prevention of such attacks was cited as a ground for Israel's Operation Litani in 1978.
