Band of Gypsys is a live album by Jimi Hendrix, released in 1970 before he died. It was the last album Hendrix himself authorized to be released.
After the Jimi Hendrix Experience broke up in 1969, Jimi Hendrix played with Gypsy Suns and Rainbows, the band that he gave his famous Woodstock performance with. The band was short lived, however, and he formed A Band of Gypsys with his drummer friend Buddy Miles and bassist Billy Cox . The band recorded some studio material that is seen on some posthumous releases, but the material on Band of Gypsys shows Hendrix in his element, such as the long, intricate solo on "Machine Gun." He generally avoided playing some of his more popular songs "Wild Thing" and "All Along the Watchtower" (Though he did play a few Experience standards like "Voodoo Child (Slight Return)") and opted to play new material.
