A bandura is a Ukrainian plucked-string instrument. Although it sounds similar to that of a harpsichord, the actual instrument resembles a large lute.
First mentioned in Polish chronicles in 1441 it developed from another plucked-string Ukrainian Folk instrument known as the kobza.
Contemporary instruments have up to 64 strings tuned chromatically from C-a. The strings are plucked by the fingers of both hands.
In the 20th Century the bandura has undergone a revival, being taught in music schools, conservatories and being manufactured in factories. Prominent composers have begun to compose serious music for it.
- Bandura can also refer to Canadian psychologist Albert Bandura.
