The outrigger canoe is a type of boat that was developed in the islands of Southeast Asia for sea travel. It differs from a simple canoe in the use of a lateral support float held at some distance from the main hull. This "outrigger" gives the canoe greater stability and seaworthiness. (Sometimes one outrigger is placed on each side, but the single-outrigger design is more common.)

Outrigger canoes can be quite large fishing or transport vessels, and are sometimes used for outrigger canoe racing . The technology has persisted into the modern age; in the Philippines, outrigger canoes (called 'bangcas') are often fitted with gasoline engines.
