Big Bang (comics)

The Big Bang is a significant event in the fictional history of Milestone Comics, in which many of the superheroes and supervillains of Dakota City got their powers. The concept was the brainchild of Christopher Priest, who in turn claimed African-American urban legends as the source of inspiration.

The event took place in Paris Island, which suffered from heated gang wars for what seemed like forever. In 1993, the leaders of all Paris Island gangs decided to settle their grievances once and for all. The confrontation was dubbed "big bang". The police found out about it and decided to take measures. Seeing an opportunity, Mayor Jefferson ordered the police to spray every gang member at the Big Bang with a gas laced with a radioactive marker that, in theory, would allow the police to track down all the gang members. The mayor was hoping that this would boost her reputation for being "tough on crime". But when the marker was released, something went terribly wrong. Most of those who were exposed to the gas died on the spot. The rest mutated and gained powers. Only some of those retained their original appearance. The survivors were dubbed "Bang Babies". The mayor disavowed any involvement. The survivors went on to become superheroes and supervillains that continued to roam Dakota City for years to come.
