British Ecological Society (BES) is a professional society for ecologists located in the United Kingdom.
The society was founded in 1913 making it the oldest society for ecologists in existence. Its original aims were "to promote and foster the study of Ecology in its widest sense"
Its journal, the Journal of Ecology was first published in 1913 for its inaugural meeting. This was later followed by others; Journal of Animal Ecology (1932) was Journal of Applied Ecology (1964) and Functional Ecology (1987)
The society also arranges meetings and symposia.
