Category:Finnish explorers

Members of the Endeavour expedition became the first Europeans known to have set a foot in Australia. Captain James Cook named the Spöring Island on the coast of New Zealand in honor of the Finnish explorer-botanist, Dr. Herman Spöring Jr.

Evolutionary theory arised out of the great natural history expeditions starting over two centuries ago. In the most important one in this category, perhaps, Dr. Herman Spöring accompanied Captain James Cook and two fellow scientists, Banks and Solander, in the 1769-1770 discovery and mapping of the Australian east coast.

Dr. Herman Spöring Jr. was the the son of a father with the same name, Professor Herman Spöring (Sr.), from the University of Turku (Åbo), Finland.

Dr. Herman Spöring Jr. died of food poiseniong at the Indian Ocean, while Captain Cook's expedition was returning from the exploration trip to the coast of Australia. The City of Sydney, Australia, has built a statue in the heart of Sydney to commemmorate Dr. Herman Spöring Jr. and his deeds.

Dr. Spöring is known to have discovered and drawn a number of Australian species, and the drawing skills of Dr. Spöring have been widely praised.
