Ideally, a category illuminates a relationship between the subjects and objects of knowledge. A fundamental is basic; it is important because it is something that other things can be built upon. Thus the fundamental category includes those sub-categories which are highlighted on the Main Page of Wikipedia. We start with Nature, the material world we inhabit. It is the object of study of the natural sciences. We, as humans, have survived as a species by applying our technology to survive and adapt to change. We propagate what we have learned to others by documentation and communication. In our communities, our social structures are the object of study of the social sciences; in society in general, and in the Wikipedia community in particular, we collaborate and cooperate to preserve what we have learned in references.
