Cloning vector

Cloning vectors are small DNA vehicles that carry a foreign (recombinant or not) DNA fragment. The insertion of the fragment into the cloning vector can be done if the vehicle and the foreign DNA are treated with the same restriction enzyme (EcoRI for example). There are many types of cloning vectors. Plasmids and bacteriophages (phage λ) are most commonly used for this purpose.
