Cynthia Powell

Cynthia Powell Lennon, (born September 10, 1939), was the first wife of Beatle John Lennon.

Born in Blackpool, England, she grew up in Liverpool and Hoylake. At 18, she attended the Liverpool College of Art, where she met and started going out with John Lennon. In 1962, she discovered she was pregnant with his child.

They married August 23, 1962 at the Mount Pleasant Register Office in Liverpool. Their marriage was kept a secret at the request of the Beatles' manager Brian Epstein, who feared the Beatles' fans would not be interested in John if they knew he was married.

The Lennons' son, John Charles Julian, was born April 8, 1963, at Sefton General Hospital in Liverpool.

The press found out about John's marriage in 1964.

In 1968, Cynthia sued John for a divorce on the grounds of his adultery with Japanese-American concept artist Yoko Ono. John did not contest. The divorce was granted on November 8, 1968. Cynthia retained custody of her son Julian.

On August 1, 1970, Cynthia married Italian hotelier Roberto Bassanini. They divorced in 1973.

In 1978, she married John Twist, an engineer from Lancashire. They divorced in 1983. After their divorce, Cynthia changed her name back to Lennon by deed poll.

In 1978, Cynthia published her autobiography, A Twist of Lennon.
