Deryck Cooke

Deryck Cooke (September 14, 1919 - October 27, 1975) was a British musicologist who was born in Leicester.

He studied at Cambridge University and spent two stints working for the BBC music department (1947-59 and 1965-76). He composed a "performing version" of Mahler's unfinished 10th Symphony that has been recorded by Sir Simon Rattle with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra (1980) and the Berlin Philharmonic (2001).

His other works include

  • The Language of Music
  • An Introduction to "Der Ring Des Nibelungen" (audio, with extracts from Solti's recording)
  • I Saw the World End: A Study of Wagner's Ring (unfinished at his death)

He died in Croydon.
