Digestive enzyme

Digestive enzymes are enzymes in the alimentary tract with a purpose of breaking down components of food so that they can be taken up by the organism. The main sites of action are the buccal cavity, stomach, and the jejunum. They are secreted by the salivary glands, the stomach, the liver, the pancreas, and the small intestine. The main digestive enzymes are:

• Amylase, which digests starch into small segments of multiple sugars and into individual soluble sugars.
• Carbohydrase , which splits up animal and vegetable fats and oils into glycerol and fatty acids.
• Lactase, which breaks down lactose into glucose and galactose.
• Lipase, which breaks down fatty acids.
• Maltase, which breaks down maltose into glucose.
• Peptidase, which splits up peptides into their component parts.
• Protease, which splits up proteins into their component amino acids.
• Sucrase, which breaks down sucrose intp glucose and fructose.
