Donkey punch

Donkey punch is a slang term for a supposed sex move performed during doggy style or anal sex. The major cause of the propagation of this term is its shock value when explaining it to an unsuspecting friend or colleague. Thus, it is considered by many to be merely a misogynist joke. In reality, were it to be practiced, it would qualify as sexual abuse, and potentially battery or assault.

Execution

The supposed move involves the male punching the female in the back of the head or neck immediately prior to orgasm. The alleged purpose is to cause the muscles around the vagina or anus of the female to contract around the male's penis, creating a supposedly enhanced orgasm for the male. A variation of the practice may be enacted to distract the female, allowing for the surprise penetration of the anus. It has been speculated the term may refer to the surprised female at this point "bucking" (like a donkey).

Though most commonly described as being performed on a female, the move could also be performed on a male during anal sex.

In reality, punching someone in the back of the head (rabbit punching) can damage the brain stem, causing death or permanent injury. It is illegal in professional boxing for this reason. The move is potentially prosecutable as sexual assault and, in the case of surprise penetration of the anus, rape.

Variation: The Tony Danza

Donkey punching is sometimes referred to as The Tony Danza (see Tony Danza), because it supposedly shows the female "who's the boss," which was the title of a popular 80's television show featuring Danza.

A variation of 'the Tony Danza' is when the male nears climax he yells "Who's the boss?" This supposedly distracts the female, allowing the male to penetrate the female's anus by surprise. At this point the male answers his own question, yelling "Tony Danza!" and proceeds to punch the female in the back of the head or neck for the reasons given above.

Urban Legend

Though it has been claimed the practice can be seen in pornography dating back to the 70's, due to the commonly perceived absurdity of the donkey punch, it is often thought of as an urban legend. Andrea Nemerson , sex columnist for the San Francisco Bay Guardian, commented:

It seems most unlikely, but I have no idea if it's true. . . . I can see it going something like this: Guy punches girl in the back of the head during butt-sex. Girl pulls away, turns and punches guy in the face, gets dressed, and leaves. [1]

Cultural references

  • In the scandal over the corporation Enron manipulating the electricity market in California in order to reap soaring profits, fraudulent schemes designed by Enron traders were given "colorful names" including "Donkey Punch." [2]
  • The TV show South Park featured an episode on sexual education in which Mr. Garrison's kindergarten class listed all the sexual "positions" they could think of, which included the donkey punch.
  • The TV show CSI: NY (episode 116 "Hush") mentions the donkey punch as a sadomasochistic practice, trying to explain bruising on a subject.
  • The video game based on the TV show The Shield features a level in which the police protagonists raid a pornography production company that makes a video titled "Donkey Punch 7."

Donkey punch is also a common name for various types of punch, an alcoholic beverage.
