Elephanta Caves

Elephanta Caves are located one and one-half hours (by boat) out of Mumbai on Elephanta island in the Sea of Oman. The site of these magnificent caves contained beautiful reliefs, sculptures, and a temple to the Hindu god Lord Shiva.

These caves are thought to date back to the Silhara kings of the 9th through 12th centuries (810-1260). In recent years, complaints have been made of visitors mistreating this important cultural and historic site. However, if treated with care and respect, a visit to these caves will be a very memorable one for any visitor to the Mumbai area.

In 1987 it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
