Emile Auguste Carolus-Duran

Emile Auguste Carolus-Duran (18371917) was a French painter, specialising in portraits..

Carolus-Durand (also known as Charles-Auguste-Emile Durand) was influenced by Gustave Courbet, and studied in Lille and Paris. In 1861 he won a pension and travelled in Italy and Spain. Best known as the teacher of many famous painters (including John Singer Sargent), he became the director of the Académie de France à Rome in 1905. The Louvre has many of his portraits. His study of Mrs William Astor is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
