Esmolol

Esmolol (tradename Brevibloc®) is a cardioselective beta-blocker given by slow injection into the veins. It is fast-acting, but also acts for only a short period of time; its primary use is for cardiac arrhythmias.

Esmolol decreases the force and rate of heart contractions by blocking beta-adrenergic receptors of the autonomic nervous system, which are found in the heart, lungs and other organs of the body. Esmolol prevents the action of two naturally occurring substances: noradrenaline and adrenaline.
