The FRV Clupea is a small, inshore fisheries research vessel, which operates mainly on the Scottish west coast, on behalf of the Scottish Executive, and is based at the port of Fraserburgh.
Commissioned in 1968, the Clupea is nearing the end of its operational life. Measuring 32m (100ft) and drawing 3.5m (11ft 6in), the Clupea is a good size for conducting research inside the constricted space of a sea loch. For research in offshore areas and the North Sea, the larger, more modern, FRV Scotia is used.
The Clupea is equiped with winches, reel drums and an A-frame, allowing it to tow a range of fishing gear, as well as deck cranes allowing the deployment of water sampling equipment and benthic grabs.
As a small vessel requiring space for equipment and laboratories, the Clupea can only accomodate four officers, six crew and six scientists.
