False vacuum

A False Vacuum is a theoretical metastable state of space in which a quantum field has a value of zero, but its corresponding vacuum energy density is not zero. According to one theory, the extraordinary density of the universe just after the Big Bang caused the creation of a false vacuum, which gave rise to the inflation observed in the universe today. The false vacuum would have a half-life rate of decay. The existence of a false vacuum may depend on the existence of the Higgs boson.
