Federated database

A federated database, also known as a virtual database, is the fully-integrated, logical composite of all constituent databases in a federated database system.

The ultimate virtual database presents all constituent parts (data structures and content, stored procedure logic, etc.) as a single contiguous whole -- such that client tools and users perceive only the virtual database, and have no knowledge or need for such knowledge that it is virtual in nature.
