Flatwoods refers to an ecological community in the Southeastern coastal plain of North America. Flatwoods are a fire maintained ecosystem dominated by longleaf pine Pinus palustris, slash pine Pinus elliotii, saw palmetto Serenoa repens, and gallberry Ilex glabra. A number of rare animals are typical of this habitat including red-cockaded woodpecker Picoides borealis, flatwoods salamander Ambystoma cingulatum and striped newts Notophthalmus perstriatus.
