Freightliner (truck)

Freightliner, LLC is a truck tractor manufacturer. The company is owned by DaimlerChrysler. The company is known mainly for the heavy duty class 8 diesel trucks that it produces, as well as class 5-7 trucks.

In the 1950's, Consolidated Freightways decided to produce their own truck line after finding that most existing heavy trucks did not have sufficient power to climb the steep grades found in the mountain regions of the western United States. The truck line eventually became known as Freightliner.

Some of the more recent and well known models include the Century Classic, Columbia, Classic, and Classic XL. Freightliner also produces the popular Sprinter delivery van.

A 1998 spinoff from Freightliner, Sterling Trucks, handles production of the company's vocational trucks , while Freightliner focuses on hauling.
