Gateway is South Africa's second-largest shopping centre, after Sandton City. Spanning some 130 000 m2 of retail and entertainment space, the centre vies with Westfield Southland in Melbourne as the second-largest in the Southern Hemisphere.
When Gateway opened in 2001, it ushered in the new concept "shoppertainment" for the first time in South Africa. The centre was modelled on world-famous centres like Mall of America and West Edmonton Mall.
Gateway includes a wave pool for surfers, a skate park and the highest indoor climbing rock in the world. It is situated on Umhlanga Ridge , north of Durban.
