Gifhorn is a city in Germany. It is located in Lower Saxony, close to Hannover, Celle, and Wolfsburg, near the Aller and Ise rivers. Gifhorn has about 40 000 inhabitants, and is capital of the district Gifhorn.

Gifhorn was first mentioned in 1196, when it was located at the crossing of two important merchant routes, one transporting salt between Lüneburg and Braunschweig, the other transporting corn between Celle and Magdeburg.
