Gilbert Murray

Gilbert Murray (or George Gilbert Aime) (January 2, 1866 - 1957) was a British classical scholar and diplomat. He was born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. He was educated at Merchant Taylors' School and St John's College, Oxford. He became Regius Professor of Greek at the University of Oxford in 1908.

His translations of Greek drama were quite popular in their time. He was one of the scholars associated with Jane Harrison in the myth-ritual school of mythography.

He was also involved as an internationalist in the League of Nations, as a delegate for South Africa, and later in the setting-up of Oxfam. His marriage to Lady Mary Howard caused him to be portrayed in a George Bernard Shaw play Major Barbara.
