Gilbert de Gant, Earl of Lincoln

Was the son of Walter de Gant and Maud of Brittany. He was created Earl of Lincoln by King Stephen, despite William de Roumare (Romayre) still enjoying the Earldom. Also called comte de Lincolne Gislebert II de Gand. He was born circa 1126.1 He married Rohese de Clare, daughter of Richard fitz Gilbert, Lord of Clare and Adeliza de Meschines; Her 1st.1 He was taken prisoner, while still in his youth, with King Stephen at the Battle of Lincoln in 1142. He married Hawyse de Romare, daughter of William de Romare, 1st Earl of Lincoln. He was compelled by Ranulph, Earl of Chester, to marry his niece, the Lady Hawise Romare, daughter and heir of William de Romare, Earl of Lincoln, in whose right he eventually became Earl of Lincoln.3 He founded, as Earl of Lincoln, Rufford Abbey circa 1148 in Nottinghamshire, England.1 4th Earl of Lincoln in England, in 1147/48.1 He died in 1156.
