Gomel

Gomel (Belarusian and Russian: Го́мель; transliteration: Hómyel' and Gómel', respectively) is the second largest city of Belarus, with a population of 481,000 (2005 estimate) and part of the Homyel Province. Gomel is situated in the south-eastern part of the country, close to the border to Ukraine and to Chernobyl nuclear power plant.

Exact date of Gomel founding is not known. It was first mentioned in the chronicles around the first half of the 12th century.
