The Great Nicobar Biosphere Reserve encompasses most of the island of Great (or Grand) Nicobar, one of India's Nicobar Islands. It is home to many endemic species of plants and animals, as well as the native Nicobari and Shompen tribes.
As of December 28, 2004, it is unknown how the island and it's inhabitants were affected by the recent nearby earthquake and resulting tsunami, but reports from other nearby islands say up to two-thirds of the population was killed.
