Gronings

Gronings is the set of dialects spoken in the Dutch province of Groningen: one in Groningen city, four in the outlands (or Ommelanden), and Westerwolds. They are the result of an intermingling of 4 languages: Saxon (the result of 9th-century Saxon domination), Frisian (the result of Groningen having been governed by Friesland in the 12th century), Dutch, and (to a lesser extent) English .

Currently, the Groningen dialects are being gradually replaced by mainstream Dutch.

Variations between the dialects

  • Ommelanden: Et ainige dat wie nait dudden is snoep oetdeeln
  • City: Et oinege det wie nait daun is baaltjes oetdelen
  • Westerwolde: Et ainege dat wi nich düdden ist snoep uutdelen
  • (The only thing we do not do is give away candy)
