A Guedel Pattern Airway is a question-mark-shaped tube designed to open a patient's airway, keep his tongue out of his throat, and prevent suffocation by liquids (blood, saliva, ...).
It is inserted into the patient's mouth upward, and rotated when introduced to point downward.
The Guedel airway removes the need for the recovery position, thus allowing access to injured parts of the patient's body. It can only be used on an unconscious patient; patients regaining cousciousness will recover their coughing reflex and expel the (then useless) airway.
