Hamburgisch

1. Hamburgisch is a Low Saxon dialect and a variant of Northern Low Saxon language spoken in Hamburg, in Germany.

It is a special city dialect with lots of anglicisms and Dutch expressions. "Hamburg" is pronounced "Hamborch" in this lowland dialect, with a "ch" similar to that in the Standard German word "Milch".

Quite typical most subdialects of the hamburgian dialect is the use of eu (spoken oi) for the vowel ö, e.g.

  • keupen (hamb.) = köpen (standard northern low saxon) = kaufen (German) = to buy
  • Kauhwarderheuft = Kuhwerderhöft (location)
  • scheun = schön = beautiful

The low saxon language in Hamburg is divided in several subdialects, e.g.

  • Finkwarder Platt
  • Olwarder Platt
  • Veerlanner Platt (with many sub-sub-dialects)
  • Barmbeker Platt

2. The term Hamburgisch is also used for Missingsch , a special dialect of high German with low German grammar and loanwords.
