Hoei

Hōei (宝永) was a Japanese era after Genroku and before Shōtoku and spanned from 1704 to 1711. Reigning emperors were Higashiyama and Nakamikado.

Change of Era

On the 13th day of the 3rd year of Genroku 17 (1704), due to the Great Genroku Earthquake on the 22nd day of the 11th month of the previous year, the era became Hōei (宝永, "Prosperous Eternity"?)

Events of the Hōei Era

  • Hōei 4, 10th month - Magnitude 8.4 earthquake in Enshuu sea, Kishuu sea (Great Hōei Earthquake)
  • Hōei 4, 11th month - Last great eruption of Mt. Fuji, appearance of Hōei-zan (large crater on side of Mt Fuji)
  • Hōei 5, 8th month - Italian missionary Giovanni Sidotti lands in Yakushima, is arrested
