Hyacinth bean

Hyacinth bean or Lablab (Lablab purpureus) is a cultivated species from the family Fabaceae. Hyacinth bean is widespread throughout the tropics, especially in Africa as a food crop, it is also grown as forage and as an ornamental species.

Hyancith bean grows as a vine, producing purple flowers and scarlet coloured seed pods. Pods and seeds may be toxic due to high concentrations of cyanogenic glucosides, and must be well cooked before they are eaten. The leaves and stems are also used to make hay.
