Insula

The insula is a region of the cerebral cortex. It lies beneath the lateral surface of the brain, within the lateral fissure. The insula is completely covered by other parts of the lateral cerebrum. These regions are known as opercula (meaning "lids"). There are frontal, temporal and parietal opercula, where parts of the corresponding lobes extend over the surface of the insula.
