J. Carrol Naish

J. Carrol Naish or Joseph Patrick Carrol Naish (January 21, 1897 - January 24, 1973) was an American actor born in New York City, New York.

He appeared on stage for several years before he began his film career. He was of Irish descent, but he never used his dialect skills to play Irishmen, but oftern portrayed many other ethnic groups: Mexican, Native American, Blacks, Orientals, etc. Besides his film roles, he appeared on the television screen often later is his career. For his contribution to the television industry, J. Carrol Naish has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame at 6145 Hollywood Blvd.

He was twice nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, the first for his role in the 1943 film, Sahara then for his performance in the 1945 film, A Medal for Benny for which he won the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor - Motion Picture.

He was married to actress Gladys Hearney.

Naish died in La Jolla, California and was interred in the Calvary Cemetery, East Los Angeles.
