The J Church is a Muni Metro line in San Francisco. It was one of San Francisco's streetcar lines in the early 20th century, and was coverted to modern light rail operation with the creation of the Muni Metro system in the late 1970s.
The line runs from the Embarcadero Station downtown to the intersection of Geneva Avenue and San Jose Avenue near City College of San Francisco . The downtown portion of the line runs in a tunnel under Market Street shared with the four other Muni Metro lines. It exits the tunnel at Duboce Street with the N Judah and turns onto Church Street. Near Dolores Park, the line goes off of the street and cuts through the middle of a few city blocks to go around a steep hill; it is this journey through private right of way that saved the line when most other San Francisco streetcar routes were converted to bus operation after World War II. The line follows Church Street again after that, all the way until the end of the street at its intersection with 30th Street. The J then takes 30th Street to San Jose Avenue, which it follows for the rest of the route.
Once the Third Street Light Rail Project is completed in 2005, the J line will likely be continued past the Embarcadero Station to the Caltrain depot and then along the Third Street extension to the Caltrain Bayshore Station.
Stations on the J Church Line
The J Church line stops at large stations for the downtown section of the route and on 19th Avenue and at smaller stops on the rest of the line. Most of the smaller stops are nothing more than a sign on the side of the street designating a stop and a few others are concrete 'islands' in the middle of the street next to the tracks that provide access for wheelchairs. Bus routes provide service to all stations and other systems with access to the stations are noted.
