Jiang Nan (Chinese: 江南, Wade-Giles: Chiang nan) refers to the southern part of the lowest reaches of the Yangtze River, including the southern part of the Yangtze Delta. This region encompases the Shanghai Municipality, the southern part of Jiangsu Province, and the northern part of Zhejiang Province. Famous Jiang Nan cities include Hangzhou, Wuxi, Suzhou, Nanjing, and Shanghai. The Qing Dynasty Emperor Qianlong made many visits to Jiang Nan (乾隆下江南), which has been the popular subject of numerous Chinese operas and television dramas.
