Jose Abad Santos (February 19, 1886—May 2, 1942) was the 5th Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Philippines.
At the outbreak of World War II, in addition to being Chief Justice, Abad Santos was named Secretary of Justice and Acting Secretary of Finance, Agriculture and Commerce in the Quezon War Cabinet. When president Manuel Quezon evacuated to the United States, Abad Santos became virtually the head of the government
In 1942, invading Japanese forces captured Abad Santos near Carcar , Cebu. He was asked to renounce his allegiance to the United States, but he refused. He was executed on May 2, 1942.
